Portable Slide Mirror
Portable Slide Mirror
A teak Campaign Portable Slide Mirror attributable to the Army & Navy Store
The Army & Navy CSL described their Mirror, which is very similar in design to this one, as a Portable Slide Looking Glass in their 1883 catalogue. It was available in teak or mahogany and available in 5 different sizes from a height of 11 inches to 17. This example is the second smallest. The mirror is stamped to the back with a 5 digit number of 14643. This form of numbering is very typical of the A&N CSL. It is not unusual for them not to have marked the mirror with their name as we know that they made items for other companies such as Solomon Bros.
The idea of the mirror is very simple but effective. It has a slide cover that lifts of for use but protect the glass during travel. The back of the frame has a hinged lectern foot which allows it to flat pack. It also has a brass mirror plate with ring so that it can be hung.
The mirror has a moulded edge to the front of the frame for decoration and has a dovetail construction. Late 19th Century.
