Cased Tea Set by Leuchars
Cased Tea Set by Leuchars
82798
A silver plated Portable Tea and Coffee Set by Leuchars.
The set is housed in a shaped leather case lined with velvet to thew top and bottom to cushion the contents. There is a small bowl, a cage for infusing tea, a jug, a pot and a removable handle that travel inside the tea pot which fits inside a larger coffee pot. The tea pot has a chain with hook hanging from the lid interior to suspend the cage. The case has the initials N.B. to the top and the retailer's details of 'Leuchars & Son, Geffroy Succs. Paris' stamped in gilt to the base.
Although Leuchars' name, as given above, and address of '2, Rue De La Paix, Paris' is stamped to most of the parts of the set, they did not make it. The mark of 'R.H R.H' for Richard Hodd & Son of Hatton Garden, London along with pseudo hallmarks is also stamped giving the maker. The quality of the set is evident from the sleeve design of the case to the moulded edge and spout of the pots. It is likely that this set originally had a spirit heater which has since gone missing. We do have one by Leuchars available that works well with the set and is on our website (see below)..
A number of different makers produced spirit stove sets either side of 1900. Most were not aimed at the top end of the market but this one was. Circa 1890.
Case size is given.
This set works with the spirit heater by Leuchars which is also shown this website. Click on the maker's name above to view it.
