Travel Box Carlisle & Watts
Travel Box Carlisle & Watts
The maker's name of 'Carlisle & Watts, 49 No. Hanover St. Edin.' is stamped along the line of gilt tooling to the interior red leather of the lid of this box.
The box is veneered in burr walnut and edged with rounded brass. It has a good quality brass campaign handle to the lid and also of note are the stop hinges. They are stamped 'WT&S Improved' for William Tonks and Sons. Tonks were particularly good brass founders and the use of their hinges ties in with Carlisle & Watts' work. The box interior is lined in Morocco Red leather to the lid and red velvet to the base. The lid has a removable velvet pad, as shown, which is fitted to take writing or dressing implements and is removable by pressing a spring loaded brass catch. The space behind the pad in the lid would take either papers or a very thin mirror. The base is covered in faded green silk.
We have also seen a dark green leather writing slope by the same maker which was consistent with this box in quality. Second quarter 19th century.
