Amboyna Dressing Case Box
Amboyna Dressing Case Box
83553
A Chinese Export amboyna Dressing Case lined in camphor wood.
The rich colour and figuring of the amboyna is offset by brass edging to all sides of the box, as is fairly typical of such Dressing Cases. The sides have flush brass skeletal campaign handles.
Originally this box would have been fitted with dividers to house various items such as razors and jars. It has some point in its recent history been stripped out and lined with marbleised paper. The same is true to the drawer below the main compartment. This is fairly common with Dressing Cases as people decide they will no longer use them for their original purpose but still want them to have a practicality.
The box is in general good condition. As some point, the brass edging to the bottom edge of the sides has buckled as the wood has shrunk. There are historic repairs using screws on both sides, highlighted in the close up images. A good job has been done with the screw heads filed down.
Amboyna is striking timber for its busy grain and colour and this is a good looking box. Mid 19th Century.
