Small Antique Box by Austin of Dublin
Small Antique Box by Austin of Dublin
Made of black leather on a wooden carcass, this box is an unusual, small size.
It is decorated with tooled lines and has a padded handle. The box is solidly made with a thicker back and front to the sides. The top is also made with strength in mind and is padded with leather to the interior. A further indication that this box was made to be secure is that it's fitted with a Bramah lock, which would have been an added expense in its manufacture. The maker's name Austin. Westmoreland St. Dublin is stamped in gilt to the lip of the interior. George Austin is known for making smaller portable items such slopes, dressing boxes and decanter boxes.
The business had moved to 39 Westmoreland Street by 1861 having formerly been at St. Andrew and William Streets. Circa 1870.
