Lawrences (late Elvey) Brass Bound Mahogany Box
Lawrences (late Elvey) Brass Bound Mahogany Box
A large brass bound mahogany Box with label noting Bought at Lawrences Ltd late Elvey, New Bond Street.
It can be seen that this box was originally a dressing case with provision to the lid interior to take a mirror and dividers to the main box. At some stage, all the dividers were removed to leave a plain box which has now been lined in baize. This box was made with strength in mind. It is heavily brass bound to all the edges with additional straps across the middle. It also has decorative corners to the top with the shape repeated to the escutcheon plate and engraving plate, which has an R cypher below a baron's crown. The lock is a W. Muckleton Patent. The small maker's label is to the lid's interior and dates the box to after 1823.
This is a good sized box that was well made by Lawrence. Early to mid 19th Century.
