A dark green leather Despatch or Writing Box.

The box is covered in a rolled leather to give a grain effect with blind tooled lines to the edges and corners. The green grained leather is also used to line the interior and the removable tray. The interior of the lid has two diagonal ribbons, meeting at the middle, for holding papers.

The box is well made but there is no sign of a maker's name. It has brass quadrant hinges linked with a rod that runs the full width of the back for additional strength. The tray has dividers to fit and inkwell and has a pen tray with compartment below. The Bramah lock, which has its original key, is a further sign of the box's quality. There is a flush brass campaign handle to the top and the box is stamped in gilt with the initials R. Y. in Old English font. Late 19th Century.
