A small leather, pony skin on pine dome topped Trunk by R & W Maltwood.

It was common at the turn of 1800 to cover trunks in leather with the hair still on. This trunk also has leather bands following the shape of the trunks edges with brass studs for both strength and decoration. The interior is lined in old newspaper over printed with a dot pattern, which was fairly typical. The interior does have raised sides to ensure a better fit with the top and is a good example of the quality of the maker.

The trunk has a small brass handle to the top and a shaped brass escutcheon and hasp lock. The owner's initials I.T.C. are formed out of studs to the top. The trunk sits on 3 pine sledge feet which would raise it from the ground.

The overall condition is good although the leather around the iron hinges has worn, exposing them. The address of 283 Strand is hardly ever seen in connection with R&W Maltwood with 168 Strand, where they spent the majority of their working life, more common. Circa 1795.
