Chinese Export Trunk From Canton

Chinese Export Trunk From Canton

Sold

A camphor wood trunk with brass corners and strap work.

The trunk is raised slightly on low bracket feet and has brass carrying handles to the sides. Both the lid edge and that of the main body of the trunk have opposing rebates to form a good seal when closed. The lid has an inset brass ring pull handle to aid in lifting it.

To the back of the lid is a small oval maker's label which looks to be for Ye Fung A-Ling and gives the simple address of Canton with two Chinese characters to the centre. The label is much simpler than those that you see on later trunks. We have not been able to find any reference to the maker but it is probable the workshop was one of the many in Carpenter's Square in Canton.

The chest is a good size for use as a coffee table. Early to mid 19th Century.
