Pair of Camphor Wood Trunks
Pair of Camphor Wood Trunks
82683
A pair of brass bound Chinese Export Trunks made of camphor.
It is uncommon to find a pair of these trunks of the same size and the detail to them is taken a couple of steps further than most others. For example the brass carrying handles to the sides also have an inset brass disc at the point that the centre of the bale would damage the wood if dropped. The trunks also have two locks each with a brass diamond shaped escutcheon but perhaps the most notable thing is the over-sized, shaped brass engraving plate to the top of each trunk. The trunks have a tray to the interior along with a candle box to one side and a shaped bar to the bottom edge of the lid. This would be useful in holding items in the lid.
The trunks both have white painted stencils to the back and sides with the initials E.W. in a triangle. One trunk is numbered 4 and the other 8 so that the owner can quickly identify what each trunk holds. This also indicates that they had at least 8 pieces of luggage.
It's great to have an identical pair of these trunks and the size is such that they would make good coffee tables or could be used at the end of twin beds. Late 19th Century.
Dimensions for each trunk is given.
