A mahogany bow fronted Ship's Desk Cabinet.
This is an interesting and unusual piece of furniture. Its practical, space saving nature along with its iron hanging hooks suggests it was made for use on board ship. The fall front has a board that can be pulled forward to double its size as a working area, supported on brass quadrants and three hinges. The cabinet could also easily be lifted off its hooks and stored when the ship needed to be readied for action.
Either side of the main door is a small cupboard which give the cabinet its bowed shape. Each cupboard is opened by pushing a sprung brass button to the cabinet interior, so they remain locked whilst the main door is closed. To the left-hand side of the divided main interior is compartment with a hidden lock. I'm hesitant to call it a secret compartment because it stands out as an unusual feature. To open it, the side wall is pushed to release a sprung catch.
This Cabinet is well made from its good choice of timber, the ebonized moulding to the panelled doors and its good brass fittings to its interesting design. We have had a board made that can be screwed to the wall to securely hold the cabinet by its iron hooks. Early 19th Century.
