This small sized mahogany Naval Bureau is in two parts with the brass handles to the side for tying down in rough weather, as much as for carrying.
The drawer combination of having the two short drawers below a top long drawer is a feature of an earlier date. The bureau interior is fitted with pigeon holes and a bank of drawers. Interestingly a couple of the drawer liners have burn marks suggesting that its previous owner was careless in leaving the drawers half opened next to a burning candle. This bureau is a fairly small size and would have been useful to an officer who would have had a minimum of space in his cabin but plently of paper work. Circa 1750 - 80.
