An upholstered, mahogany Campaign Armchair to a design by Ross of Dublin.

The chair frame is made of beech with mahogany for the legs and arm posts. The edge of the seat line, below the upholstery, has a thick mahogany veneer. Aside from being slightly smaller in size and having no locating numbers, this chair is a model that Ross are known to have made. It maybe that the differences come from it being a little later in date to previous examples we have had or that it was made in another workshop.

The buttoned back is shaped to cushion the small of the back for added comfort and it dismantles easily for travel. The arms are fixed with 5 inch long gilt brass and steel bolts through the back and wood and steel bolts up through the seat. They also have tenons to locate them and add strength. The arm posts are hinged to further reduce their size for travel. The arms and the back legs hold the back to the seat and once removed, the two will separate. The turned front feet and shaped back feet screw into the underside of the seat, with the back feet also having thumb bolts to fix their position square.

Whether made by Ross or not, this is a comfortable, campaign chair. Circa 1875.
