Pair of Ebony Campaign Chairs

This pair of Ebony Chairs fold to flat pack once the caned seat is lifted off.

The front leg / side rail sections are hinged to the back legs and are off set to sit neatly one in front of the other, when folded. The construction is pegged and the decoration subtle with a shaped rail to the front of the seat, a sweep to the back and an octagonal rail to the back legs. They would likely have been part of a larger set. The design is inspired by the English Regency and, by repute, they are from the Governor's House, Ceylon, although we have no proof of this.

There is a little repaired damage to the canning on one seat and ideally some squab cushions should be made for them to disperse the sitter's weight. These are a well made pair of chairs, rare for their age, material and origin. Anglo - Ceylonese, early 19th century.
