Georgian Naval Chair
Georgian Naval Chair
83699
A mahogany Naval Chair with leather seat.
This chair has an upholstered seat rather than a flat caned or drop in seat. As such, the padding of the upholstery, whilst it gives more comfort, prevents the seat from remaining vertical when folded. The leather has been on a very long time and could easily be original. It has developed a good, worn character and has been conserved.
The chair folds as you would expect by lifting the seat and pushing the front seat rails towards the back. The side rails have short tenons to fit mortice joints to the legs to add strength.
The back is carved with a cock beading to give subtle decoration. The top rail of the back has a wonderful historic repair to a split. An iron bracing plate has been fitted to both the front and the back. The front with four screws and the back with six.
The chair stands out for its upholstered seat and historic repair. Late 18th Century.
