An ash Roorkhee Chair by Benjamin Edgington.

Very few Roorkhee Chairs on the market have a maker's label or are British made, so the brass plaque to this campaign chair is of great interest. As can be seen the plaque gives the name 'Benjamin Edgington, Maker, London Bridge' with a crown noting the Royal Warrant.

Edgington's long history is given in our makers section and can be found by clicking on his name, above to the right. He is not a maker of campaign furniture you find often being better known for manufacturing tents etc.

This Roorkhee is fairly standard in design, excepting that it is made of ash as opposed to teak. It originally would have had canvas upholstery instead of the leather hide we have given it. The back is made to pivot for comfort and the chair, like all Roorkhees, is constructed in such a way that it will adjust to uneven ground. The seat is angled with the back lower than the front rail. The two side rails each have a small screw which would have held a belt strap to further strengthen the chair. This is now missing but we have replaced it with a separate leather belt strap. Circa 1900.
