Armchair by Ross of Dublin
With its shape to cushion the small of the back and open arms this button backed chair by Ross of Dublin is both comfortable and fashionable to the style of its day. It is made of walnut for the show wood, which is typical of Ross, with a beech frame.
The seemingly random numbering of the different components of the chair is also typical of Ross with the two pairs of bolt on front and back legs stamped '33' and 22' respectively. However, it is interesting that the arms, which can only go in one position on the chair are each stamped 'U6' to their underside. Presumably these marks were to ensure that the arms remained together with the chair in the factory, where several may have been made at once. The arms sit into position by means of mortise and tenon joints and are fixed with long bolts with decorative turned finial ends from the back and under the seat.
The brass plague under one of the arms with the later name of Ross & Co. and the address of 9, 10 & 11 Ellis's Quay, Dublin, allows us to date the chair to after 1860.
