Austin Campaign Decanter Box

Austin Campaign Decanter Box

Sold

Mahogany Decanter Boxes with brass strapwork are always desirable and this one more so as it has a recognised maker's name of Austin.

George Austin is listed in British Campaign Furniture by Brawer. This box is marked 'Austin Manufacturer' and 'Westmoreland St. Dublin' in gilt on either side of the lock plate. The lock plate is also stamped 'Austin 39 Westmoreland St. Dublin' and 'Austin, Dublin' to the escutcheon. It is known that George Austin had premises at 6 -7 St. Andrew Street and 9 William Street at least until 1850, when the City Directory lists him as 'fancy cabinet manufacturer and cabinet warerooms'. A label in the Decanter Box illustrated in Brawer also describes him as a 'Cabinet Maker' and 'Manufacturer of Portable Writing Desks, Dressing Cases, Work Boxes &c, Military Canteens & Plate Chests'. By 1861 the business had moved and Thomas (presumably the son) and George Austin had issued a token coin noting 'Austin's Dressing Case Makers, 39 Westmoreland St. Dublin, Late of St Andrew St'. This box is well made and has distinctive brass corners to the top which are similar to the box illustrated in Brawer. The square glass spirit decanters, one of which is a period replacement, have a pouring spout with sawtooth rim and octagonal mushroom stoppers. Circa 1865.
