This watercolour of Shorncliffe Camp in Kent is attributable to Saumarez r and it shows a Guards regiment on manoeuvers.
The mounted officer to the centre with a lance is probably a 9th Lancer. The other mounted man is a Staff Officer and he looks to be giving orders to the Guards Officer. Shorncliffe Camp was built at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. It is only 20 miles from the French coast and invasion was very much a threat at the time. It was used throughout the 19th Century for training infantry and of course was local for Saumarez's East Kent regiment. Circa 1882.
