To all intents and purposes this small sized teak campaign chest looks to be Anglo Indian but on close inspection it can be seen that it is in fact English. This is revealed by the good quality of the dovetails and the brass strap work. The dovetails are finely cut and the brass bands, especially the corner sections, are far superior to those that you would find on many English chests let alone the cut sheet brass that is more common to Anglo Indian chests. These protective straps are fixed with steel screws which were more commonly used, as opposed to brass, on earlier military chests. The chest is fitted with flush, turned knob handles. This is simply a variation to the typical brass campaign handles, albeit less common. The first long drawer is fitted with a support bar to each inside edge, running three quarters the depth of the drawer. It is probable that this was for a removable board which might have been used as a brushing slide or low writing surface. The small size of this chest increases its desirability. Early 19th century.
