Small Crocodile Suitcase

Small Crocodile Suitcase

Sold

A small crocodile skin leather Suitcase.

The bottom section has a canted top edge for ease of closing and is lined in green. Rather unusually, the remains of a pink shipping label is fixed to the inside of the lid, giving the name W. Donaldson. Behind it is an oval green crocodile leather maker's label noting North West Tannery Co. Makers Cawnpore. The company was one of five that started up in the town between 1880 and 1905. It soon earned a good reputation for its quality and by 1900 was the only organised factory in India using the latest machines to produce footwear. In 1904 it was taken over by M.S. Cooper Allen & Co. who were also footwear makers. Combined, they became one of the country's biggest leather manufacturers supplying 6 million army boots during the Great War.

The case has five domed studs for it to rest on and has nickel slide locks stamped 'Secure Lever, Made In England'. The handle is shaped for comfort.

A good, small sized suitcase. Early 20th Century.
