Silver Campaign Cutlery Set

Silver Campaign Cutlery Set

Sold

A continental silver travel cutlery set in a roll up red leather wallet.

The set has a large fork and spoon that unscrew to reduce in length, a smaller spoon and a large steel knife with ivory handle. The knife also has a locking mechanism to prevent it folding during use. All four pieces of cutlery are engraved with the same heraldic device of a deer, which is not uncommon.

The silver cutlery is also stamped with a maker's initials and another mark, twice to look like four marks. It is likely that these are European silver marks but we have not been able to trace them. All the components fit in to a roll up wallet and it looks like there may have been a fifth piece which is now missing. This is likely to have been a teaspoon. The case is well worn with holes, tears, the strap replaced and other damage.

An interesting, earlier set of campaign cutlery. Early 19th Century.

Rolled case size is given.
