Officer Of The Watch Naval Telescope From Gieves Ltd
Officer Of The Watch Naval Telescope From Gieves Ltd
82473
A nickel plated on brass, single draw Naval Telescope with ropework grip. The telescope has a dust slide to protect the eye piece with a cap to the other end. The barrel is engraved Gieves Ltd. with the serial number 8505.
Gieves were well known naval outfitters who were in existence for most of the 19th century under various names as partners joined or left. They are still in existence today as the well known tailors Gieves & Hawkes on Saville Row. It is likely that Gieves bought the telescope wholesale to sell on to their customers and other examples are known that are also marked Ross for the London makers.
The inside of the cap is stamped Godden for the owner and it is probable that he added the ropework grip, to while away the time at sea. The early 19th century Navy Lists show several Goddens and with just a surname to go on, there is little chance of knowing more about the owner. The silvered brass and ropework grip adds to the appeal of the telescope. Circa 1920.
The closed size is given with the extended size increasing to 24 1/4 inches in length.
