Made of lignum vitae this Life Preserver is well balanced despite the fact that it's made from a timber that is sometimes referred to as iron wood.

Although it would perhaps preserve your life it might well extinguish another if used in anger. The turning is good with a grip to the handle and there is a hole to take a looped wrist thong. S.W. Silver, at a later date, recommended a Life Preserver as a necessary item in their list for outfitting civilian for travel. A good piece of treen. Early to mid 19th Century.
