A large sized Backgammon, Draughts and Chess Board in the form of two books, with counters, chess men, dice and tumbler.

This form of games box was sold by a number of retailers at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The Army & Navy CSL were one such retailer and their catalogues show that they sold them in 3 different sizes and qualities. Buyers were expected to buy the counters and chess men separately. This set come with boxwood and ebony counters, turned and carved bone English Chessmen, a leather dice tumbler cup and a pair of bone dice.

The box is made of red and black leather with gilt tooling on a softwood. Although it was possible to have your own title added to the spines of the two books, most, like this one, were stamped 'History Of England'. The overall condition of the set is good although one white Rook has a missing finial. Circa 1900.

Folded Size is given. Double the depth and halve the height for playing size.
