Victorian Grog Measure For Rum

Victorian Grog Measure For Rum

Sold

A copper half gallon, Royal Navy Round Measure for issuing the mix of rum and water that is known as grog.

The measure is marked VR below a Crown and with a 6 indicating that it was verified by the Birmingham Weights and Measures office during the reign of Queen Victoria. The 1/2 gallon is stamped in an abbreviated form below the broad arrow mark.

Of the 8 measure sizes used by the Royal Navy, the ½ gallon is the second largest behind the gallon size. The larger measures tend to be harder to find than the smaller ones and aside from the odd, expected dent, the condition is good. Late 19th Century.
