Sgt. Garret's Coffee Pot

Sgt. Garret's Coffee Pot

Sold

The Corporals of the 2nd Division Medical Staff Corps got together to buy this silver plated pewter coffee pot as a gift for their colleague Sgt. GH Garret.

The occasion was his marriage in March 1888 and the engraving goes on to say that it was a mark of their esteem and respect for him. The back of the pot is engraved Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot. Although no maker's name the pot is well considered and has two black discs to the handle to insulate it from the heat and a ivory handle to the lid. It is engraved with foliate decoration to each side, forming a cartouche for the engraving. The underside of the pot is stamped 4 Gill along with 4126 which is presumably the maker's item identification number and a 6. Much of the silver plate has worn off the coffee pot but it is very much evident to the undersides. Dated 1888.
