A mahogany Portable Desk or Writing Slope.

This Georgian desk has protective gilt brass edging and skeletal campaign handles to the sides. The top corners also have brass decorative Fleur de Lys and the escutcheon and blank name plate to the top are very elaborate.

The interior retains its original blue, grained leather writing surface, the top section of which has a shield escutcheon to the lock and has a key. Below this board is a removable tray with a deeper well below. In order to accommodate this, the desk doesn't have a drawer accessed from the side of the box. As might be expected, it does had a sprung panel board hiding 3 secret drawers. The bottom section of the writing surface also lifts to reveal red, criss-crossed ribbons to its underside for holding notes and letters and a second storage well.

The desk tidy area has an ebonised and shaped pen tray and compartments for inkwells etc. One inkwell, without a top, remains with the desk.

This is a good quality writing desk and also has it's main key. Early 19th Century.
