Augustus Northey's Writing Slope
6570
The brass name plate to this mahogany 3 fold Writing Slope is engraved 'Mr. Augustus Northey, 51st Light Infantry'.
JW Northey purchased his Ensign commission on 14th July 1837 and retired from the Army on 27th December 1850. As the box is engraved 'Mr.' rather than with a rank it is likely he purchased the box on first entering the army. The box is brass edged with steel screws and the interior has a green leather document wallet to the lid and secret drawers. The lock is marked 'Lambley Patent' and is unusual in that it has a locking tooth on either side of a locating pin. Circa 1837.
