Small Lignum Fid

Small Lignum Fid

£225

A lignum vitae wood Sailor's Fid for opening the strands of a rope for splicing.

The majority of fids were made of lignum or iron wood, as its also known, but you do find them in other woods and marine ivory. The wood to this example is particularly pleasing to the eye for the two colour mix with the sap wood. It is also well turned giving it a fineness to the shape with three ring turnings to the top. Early to mid 19th Century.
