Mahogany Apothecary Box

Mahogany Apothecary Box

Sold

A mahogany 12 bottle Apothecary Box of unusual form.

Most Apothecary's are upright in shape with a drawer. This one opens like a three-fold book cabinet with two wings hinged to central section, to double the length when fully open. When the right hand wing is unlocked and opened, a button catch to the middle section will release the left hand wing. The middle section has fittings to take six bottles with each wing holding another three. The fittings are lined in a light blue material edged in gold braid. Beneath the shorter bottles to the middle section are two drawers with two dividers each. The wings have taller bottles and no drawers. The interior veneers look to be kingwood. The top edge of the middle section has four locating lugs that line up with holes to the wings to ensure a good fit. There is also a lug to the left wing to fit to the right when closed.

The box is well made and the lock and blue lining with braid suggests it is French. Early 19th century.

Closed size is given.
