Large Money Bag SOLD

This leather Money Bag is much larger than most. It is lined in leather and has large leather corners to the base running from side to side to reinforce it. The base has eight brass domed studs as feet. The mouth of the bag has a central brass lock, which is engraved 'District Bank Nantwich' and two eyelets to take padlocks. These eyelets push through holes to the mouth frame and twist to lock their position.

The District Union Bank Company traces its history back to 1829 when it was formed as a joint stock bank by Joseph Macardy in Manchester. It was quickly renamed Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co. and acquired by Christy, Lloyd & Co. A number of other banks were acquired as the company grew including the Nantwich & South Cheshire Joint Stock Bank in 1844. Expansion continued with several more banks joining the company and branches in Lancashire, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Yorkshire. In 1924 it was renamed District Bank Ltd and continued to grow. Eventually, in 1962 it was acquired by National Provincial bank which then merged in 1968 with Westminster Bank to form Nat West.

This Money Bag stands out for both its larger size and the bank's name engraved to the lock. Circa 1930.
