Made of mahogany with rosewood and satinwood veneers, this Travel Chess set by Jaques has a dark blue leather case.

Jaques described their In Statu Quo Chess sets as '...so contrived that the Game may at any time be discontinued, and the board folded and placed in its case without the Chessmen being disturbed. For ordinary play, as well as for sea or railway, this Board has obvious advantages not possessed by any other hitherto offered to the public'. The chess men each have a brass fitting to their underside which holds them in place when a brass plate, inset between the case and the veneered playing board, is moved by the depression of the locking buttons.

The board is stamped 'In Statu Quo Chess Board' and 'Jaques Patentee London'. It has an area for taken players at each end and brass locking bars to fix the board in the open position. The case is marked in gilt with the board's name and 'Jaques & Son Patentees, London' within a belt and has a slide to the interior to indicate whose turn it is, when a game stopped part way through. Late 19 Century.
