This one-piece chest is made of Asian hardwood with rosewood veneer to the top.

The top drawer is a secretaire with five short drawers and a combination of pigeon holes of two different heights. To the centre is a cupboard with a sixth drawer to the interior. The baize to the writing surface has been replaced.

The chest has decoratively shaped flush handles to the drawers and replaced carrying handles to the sides. It also has ivory escutcheons and inlay to the drawers fronts. The chest sits on fixed turned feet. The overhanging moulding and drawers handles point to it being early 19th century in date. This is an interesting chest with a curious anomaly. The bottom drawer is the only one made of rosewood. It looks period and not a later replacement, but you wonder why all the drawers were not made of the same timber.

This is a good looking chest that stands out for its good drawer handles, smaller size and the timber used. Early 19th Century.
