Camphor Sea Chest

Camphor Sea Chest

Sold

It is not common to find sailor's sea chests made of camphor wood and the timber to the front of this one has been well chosen for the movement of its grain.

It is made with open dovetail joints and brass straps to further strengthen it. The rope becket handles to this chest are particularly nice with leather to make for a more comfortable grip. The interior originally had a candle box and divider. A Sea Chest would not only offer a sailor storage space, a seat and table but also be his one private space on board.

The antique period is mid 19th century.
