Mahogany Campaign Naval Bureau

Mahogany Campaign Naval Bureau

Sold

A large, Georgian 2-part, mahogany Naval Bureau with carrying handles to the top section.

With cannon everywhere on board ship, including the officer's quarters, furniture had to be moved quickly to prepare the guns. Although this Naval Bureau is larger than most we have seen, being in 2-parts would certainly aid its removal. The bottom section has 3 long drawers with swan neck handles whilst the top has a single drawer flanked by lopers to support the fall. The interior of the top has 2 banks of 3 short drawers with a long drawer between them. This central drawer has an open section below for papers and 4 pigeon holes above. The interior drawers and lopers, have axe drop handles. The Bureau stands on bracket feet.

The Naval Bureau is an interesting piece of furniture and the link to the development of the 2 part campaign chest can be easily drawn. Circa 1780.
