This mahogany book cabinet has 2 adjustable shelves behind glazed doors to give plenty of space for an officer's library.
Although it may seem logical for book cabinets to have brass strap work and corners like the chests most were made to sit on, the majority do not have them. This one does and the brass corners to the top have the added bonus of being decoratively shaped, which is very pleasing to the eye. It also has flush carrying handles to the sides, which although replaced, are the correct larger size and design. When closed for travel, in much the same way you would close a book, the cabinet is secured by two locks.
This type of portable book cabinet works very well on top of a campaign chest. Mid 19th Century.
