Antique Campaign Chest by Shepherd
Antique Campaign Chest by Shepherd
A brass bound, mahogany Campaign Chest by J. Shepherd.
This chest is slightly larger than most at 42 inches in width and Shepherd has also used a larger size of brass strapwork and corners. The flush handles have backplates that sit on top of the drawer fronts rather than set in and have rounded bales. The drawers have an incised line mould to their edge and are lined in ash. The top left short drawer is also fitted with later dividers to give 3 compartments to the back half. The 2 halves of the chest are united by 4 lugs set into the top section. The backboards are made of stained pine and each section has a large painted stencil noting Est 1778 From J. Shepherd, Cabin Fitter, 90 Bishopsgate St., London. A shipping label to the underside of the chest notes C. Paterson Esq. of 91 Haldon Road, London SW18.
This is a well-made chest and the mahogany a good colour. We have seen 2 other chests by Shepherd before but they come to the market infrequently. Circa 1865.
Size without feet is given.
