A Chinese Export trunk made of camphor wood to protect the contents.

It is decorated with simple painted lines and fleur-de-lys to the corners. The trunk is edged in brass with brass corners and straps to the bottom and a blank engraving plate to the top. There is a small flush handle for lifting the lid which is fitted on 3 hinges, the middle of which is smaller. The underside of the lid has 3 support bars to help it bear weight. The interior is plain but there are signs that it originally had a candle box. It stands on block feet and also has 2 support rails to the underside. These trunks were specifically made for travellers passing through the ports of the East and came in a variety of sizes.

The size of this one is good to go at the end of a bed or for use as a coffee table. Mid 19th Century.
