Top Half of An Aldershot Campaign Chest

Top Half of An Aldershot Campaign Chest

Reference

82604

The top half of a brass bound, teak Aldershot or Hut Chest.

It is not uncommon for the top halves of Aldershot Chests to become separated from their bottom packing case. Presumably past owners either didn't know how they assembled or didn't want to keep the packing case. The simple way to tell if the top half of a campaign chest was part of an Aldershot or not is to check the underside for lug holes. An Aldershot Campaign Chest will not have any.

Used at its reduced height, the top half makes a very useful coffee table or at the end of a bed, providing lots of easily accessible storage space and a flat surface. Although not marked, this half chest is very similar to those made by the Army & Navy CSL. It's possible it was made by them but for sale by another retailer. Circa 1900.
