A set of teak and brass Campaign Shelves or a Portable Bookcase, as the Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd named them.

As can be seen, the shelves will flat pack for travel simply by undoing the finials, which screw through a hole in the shelf into the top brass standard. In turn these standards are unscrewed from those separating the middle and bottom shelf. The bottom standards then screw into the domed feet, one of which is a period replacement. The finials to this set of shelves are a little different to others we have seen having more of a point.

This form of shelves were made over a relatively long period of time and sold by a number of makers and retailers including the A&N CSL and Harrods. They were sold with and without cresting rails and were also available with wooden pillars instead of brass standards. It is probable that the wooden pillars were not very popular as few are seen on the market. The underside of each shelf is stamped with the reference numbers 6 and 115. Late 19th Century.
