This travelling Backgammon, Chess and Draughts Board was first patented by John Jaques of London on June 10, 1858 and the patent is illustrated in Brawer.
The boxwood and ebony pieces, which are turned to the 1 side and set with a composition 2 dimensional chess piece to the other, fit with the 2 dice into a central leather tube. The leather edged cloth board is then folded in half and rolled around this tube, with the 2 dice tumblers fitting over the ends of the rolled board. This is then slid into the leather edged tube, which originally would have had a band at either end to stop movement. These sets are quite rare but perfect for travel, giving 3 popular games. Circa 1860.
Tube size given.
