A leather Hat Box by the Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd.
The interior has a shield shaped label stamped in gilt 'Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd. Made At The Society's Works'. The A & N CSL made a huge variety of leather luggage and several different types and sizes of hat cases. The quality to this one is good . It has a number of straps to the interior with fixing hooks to one end to hold a variety of hats in place. The lid has evidence of also once having had 2 straps, probably to take an Opera Hat.
The lid has two short straps and a four lever brass lock by J. Hodges. The model number 15 is stamped above the lock. The owner's initials W.J.M. are stamped in black letters to the top. Late 19th century.
