Leather Hat Box Travel Inkwell
Leather Hat Box Travel Inkwell
83267
A large leather Bucket Hat Box Travel Inkwell made of leather on brass with a glass bottle.
This form of novelty inkwell was made in a couple of different sizes and smaller ones can be seen elsewhere on this website. The lid opens on a hidden push button which releases a sprung catch that locks the lid. The interior has a secondary lid that is also held by a sprung catch. This lid has a pad to the interior but the spring below it, to seal the neck of the bottle, has deteriorated. The top of the hat box has a replaced fishtail handle.
It would have been common to see this form of hat box at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. It's shape lends itself well for a novelty inkwell. Circa 1900.
