Officer with Orders

Height
7" (18 cm)
Width
4 1/2" (11.5 cm)
This watercolour sketch has been painted on a folded piece of paper as if it was to be used as a card and is attributable to Saumarez.
The soldier is well drawn with good movement to his body which is half turned as he looks to his side. He has a cane under his arm and is reading either orders or a letter. He is wearing an officer's undress with a frock coat of melton cloth with mohair loops to the front and laced olivettes. The trousers are probably overalls and the hat is a pill box. The colour is dark blue with gold or yellow and is probably one of the Lancer regiments. Circa 1884.
