Marlin Spike

Marlin Spike

£65

A steel Marlinspike with turned fruitwood handle and brass collar.

Marlinspikes are essentially a small fid. The name comes from marline rope and they were used by sailors for drawing marline tight, making a marlinspike hitch knot and, like a fid for untying knots and unlaying rope for splicing it to another piece.

The turned wooden knob handle cushions nicely in the palm of the hand to get strength behind a push. The steel spike has seen good use with the odd bend to its shape and the point slightly turned. Late 19th Century.
