A mahogany, brass bound military chest attributable to Gregory Kane of Dame Street, Dublin.

This chest bares all the distinctive hallmarks of Gregory Kane; the raised drawer handle plates, the fitting of the brass strapwork, the round escutcheons, the two fixing lugs and the back boards etc. Added to this the top righthand drawer has a Hobbs & Co. lock which Kane is known to have used.

The two short drawers both have an unusual, inset brass plate to the top above the centre of the drawer. These have been on for a long time and it's likely at some stage a locked drawer had to be forced open. The plate was used as an easy repair to tidy up the damage with another added to the other drawer to match.

The chest has a good colour and the Hobbs & Co. lock, used before they became Hobbs, Ashley & Co., allows us date it to between 1852 and 1855.
