A leather on wood Mule Trunk.
This Mule Trunk is a little earlier than most that we see and the size is also different. Its longer but not as deep. The trunk has good iron corners and fittings and a very flat, hard top. The back has an iron bar that has been cut at a later stage, probably to make it easier to use indoors. Origanally the bar would have been used to hang the trunk onto a beast of burden saddle. The lock has an iron loop (to take a padlock) that fits through a hasp. To open, the loop needs to be turned 180 degrees to allow the hasp to lift over it.
The size and flat top makes this trunk very useful as a coffee table or at the end of the bed. Mid to late 19th Century.
