Black Trunk by Insall of Bristol
Black Trunk by Insall of Bristol
A black canvas or oil cloth trunk on softwood by William Insall of Bristol.
The trunk has brass stud work and iron straps to both strengthen and decorate it. The interior is lined with a printed paper and has Insall's label to the interior of the lid. As the pine or deal of the trunk has shrunk, so the paper has split in a few places. The carrying handles to the sides are iron and the lid has an over hanging fringe to help keep the trunk waterproof. A detail which points to the quality of the west country maker. The trunk sits on 3 sledge feet running side to side, which were important to raise it off wet ground.
