Campaign Writing Table by Ross & Co.
Campaign Writing Table by Ross & Co.
7604
As you might expect of Ross & Co. this campaign writing table in made of walnut and is not a standard design. Ross had a fondness for walnut, not found with other makers and are known for their innovation. The legs screw into the C scroll carving below the bottom drawers and this decorative addition would have appealed to the Victorian soldier with an eye for fashion. The desk has its original dark red leather to the top which retains traces of gilt to the tooling.
True campaign desks do not become available often and this one is particularly interesting. The brass maker's plaque is to the top right hand drawer and gives the address of '9, 10 & 11 Ellis's Quay' dating the desk, with the name, to between 1860 and 1864.
